Time jump Music in the room - music with the room
that creates subtle tension,
draws connecting lines where there seem to be none and
allows for an effortless change of time.
Two musical genres, the Gregorian chants of the Premonstratensian monks of the Middle Ages and the jazz music of the present day, inspired each other in the space of the late Gothic Wintringer Chapel on May 9, 2004. Both Gregorian music and the modern art of improvisation have a common intention: to relate medieval music to the space and time of the performance. In this way, it unfolds in an authentic place. Gregorian music is integrated into the liturgical rituals at the great festivals of the church year and the monastic daily life of the monks. Since the Middle Ages, the same Gregorian chants have been heard in Latin or Christian monastic churches of the Roman style all over the world at certain times during the day. This was also the rule in the priory church of the Premonstratensian monks in Wintringen.
In both forms of music, Gregorian and jazz, improvisation plays an important role. It aims at a spontaneous invention of music in relation to various parameters such as harmony and rhythm. The artist is guided by his inspiration and emotion and enters into a multi-layered dialogue with fellow musicians, audience, time and space. As a practical skill, improvisation is still indispensable today, especially for jazz musicians. It virtually demands an engagement with the now and the here.
The Saarland jazz musician Cornell Wegmann tried with students of the Hochschule für Musik Saar, formed in the Schola Saraviana under the direction of the lecturer for Gregorian chant, Christine Pfeifer-Huberich, the musical "Time jump" of jazz and Gregorian chant. The two musical genres merged in the Wintringer Chapel for an audible moment with the present.
